York, PA
We’ve been back in our former home town of York, PA for almost a month and the time to move on is quickly approaching. But before we move, here is one last blog with some of the things we have been doing during our stay (besides cleaning and yard work at daughter Jessica’s house).
One Friday evening we joined other members of the Susquehannock High School Social Studies Department at a local restaurant to celebrate the retirement of two members. Our friends, Joe and Deb Dominick, are retiring at the end of the school year after many years in the classroom. John taught with both during his final working years and we have met up with them a few times during our retirement in Florida and Montana. We enjoyed reminiscing with friends and honoring the Dominicks.
One afternoon we drove to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to visit with friends, Terry and LuAnn (Paint Your Landscape). They are currently serving as volunteer camp hosts at Greenbelt National Park in College Park, MD just north of Washington, DC.
We had another very pleasant visit with them while enjoying a drink at a nearby coffee shop followed by some exploration of the Inner Harbor and a great lunch at an Irish restaurant. If you are ever in the Baltimore area and haven’t been to the Inner Harbor, it is definitely worth a visit. Its a bit crowded in nice weather but there is much to see and do there.
One of the nicest places to eat in York County is located right on the banks of the Susquehanna River in the small town of Wrightsville. The John Wright Store is one of America’s oldest sellers of cast iron products dating back to 1880. In addition to the store they have a very nice restaurant with an open deck along the river.
We lived in the York area for 25 years but never came here to eat during all that time (typical of many people who don’t visit local attractions, right?). But when Jessica’s friends, Ned and Jodie, invited us to dinner there, we were happy to not only have a nice visit with them, but also finally get a chance to have John Wright visit the John Wright Restaurant!

Sunday was Jessica’s birthday and to celebrate with her, Jessica’s college roommates came to her house for the weekend. Jessica was looking for some place nice for a Saturday brunch so, back we went to the John Wright Restaurant!

Now it’s time for us to fire up the motorhome and head north. We will miss Jessica and our friends in York but not the sound of the loud trucks from the highway near the park where we stayed.
Next stop is the Finger Lakes of New York for a visit with Dave and Sue. More on that later . . .
John, did you ask for a discount of your own restaurant? A month in one spot and then meeting friends and doing stuff makes the time zoom by. Im so glad you had plenty of opportunities to hang out with LuAnn and Terry but I did wish we were there too 🙂

We should have asked about a discount at the restaurant. Twice there and we forgot both times.

And Welcome to the Genesee Valley! We hope that you enjoy your stay here and we have an opportunity to meet at some point! Some places not to forget for food and etc.:
Muddy Waters for a coffee spot. Sea Cow Grill (lousy, lousy name but good steak and pasta dishes), Ember – maybe you can reserve that cute little chef’s table?. Valley Inn (Warsaw) for that special night out (“great presentation and food!” as well as some day luncheons available). A trip to Letchworth Park which the natives always forget but is really a treat, especially with your historic interests. You could also do D&R Depot and the jello museum in Leroy. And if you like cars like I think you might, there’s the Thursday night car show at Charcoal Corral in Perry with tons of “oldies but goodies” to examine.

I didn’t know that we were in the presence of a celebrity, having a restaurant named after you John. It was wonderful to see the two of you again, but next time we expect to be in hiking boots and hitting the trail with the two of you. Safe travels and we look forward to meeting up with you again soon.
We didn’t want you and Terry to feel uncomfortable with such a famous individual so we kept it quiet…haha!

We are on the move, Lisa, but we will be slowing again because we have stumbled on to this little paradise. Our couple days may be a lot longer:)

LuAnn and Terry at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor must have been wonderful. Love that last picture of the “kids” cutting up. I know what you mean about never seeing the “touristy” places in your own home town. Our problem was that ours were so famous everyone who came to visit us wanted to go there. Safe travels!!
We understand that, Sherry, because when we stopped in your home town to visit friends, we had to take a tour of the university.

Hard to believe you were in York a month already. Sure sounds like you had a great stay there seeing old friends and meeting up with fellow RVers. We have never been to York or Baltimore–there is much for us to explore on the East Coast.
The John Wright Store and Restaurant is a place I would have guessed you had visited before. It’s funny how being residents of a place can shift your perspective on popular places to see. I think it has something to do with having jobs and a different focus during that time of our life–but maybe not. . . .
Lucky Jessica to have your help and to have you there for her birthday. Hopefully, she will be able to join you in some fun adventure somewhere before the school year begins again. Can’t wait to hear your travel plans after the lakeside retreat. I don’t think I would be in a hurry to leave there. Not sure how far away the Finger Lakes Distillery is, but that place is sure worth visiting if you get a chance.
Pam, it is hard to believe we were in York for a month especially since we were only staying two weeks. Now we are at Dave and Sue’s lake property and it looks like our couple days stop will now be a month!!!! It is so great to have the flexibility. I’ll check out the where abouts of the distillery. Thanks for the tip!!

I’m surprised that Jessica has not taken friends to “Dad’s restaurant” over the years :-). As much as we’re looking forward to hitting the road next year, we’re glad to have the flexibility to return home for as long a visit as we want. Safe travels on your next adventure.
