The Holidays in Ft. Myers

Ft. Myers, FL

Yes, it’s been a while since our last blog, but things have been rather slow around here (not a bad thing).  On December 20th we left our previous home in Big Cypress Preserve, just west of the Everglades National Park, and began our move north to northern New York.  It will be a bit of a slow trip, with a few stops along the way.  Look for our arrival in the north country around, say, the month of May!  Our first stop is for a brief stay (5 weeks) in the warm environment of Ft. Myers.  We are staying in Cypress Woods RV Resort, just east of I-75.  Cypress Woods is a large park of oversized, privately owned sites.  We managed to rent a great site that is nicely landscaped with a variety of plants that give us a good deal of privacy.

A few days after we arrived we received a call from our daughter, Jessica.  Somehow she had figured out our location and was at the nearby airport.  She asked if we could pick her up and give her a place to stay for a few days.  Apparently the cold temperatures of Pennsylvania were not to her liking!

One of Jessica’s running friends back in PA posted a picture on-line showing her bundled up from head to toe for a winter run.  So as Jessica headed out for a run here in warm FL, she had to post a similar picture, with just a different running outfit and background.

Running in humid south Florida

While better than “up north”, the weather here in south Florida has been a bit less than ideal, with a lot of cloudy skies.  But we have managed to get in some beach time at Ft Myers Beach and Sanibel Island.  The width of the beach on Sanibel is a bit less than we remember from our last visit two years ago, but it is still a beautiful place to spend a quiet afternoon compared to the hustle and bustle found at Ft. Myers Beach.

Sanibel Island

When we last were here two years ago, Jessica also found the time to pay us a visit.  Since then she has gone through a remarkable physical transformation through a combination of exercise (running and the gym) and a disciplined healthy diet.  We have also lost a few pounds though  a similar (but much less physically intense) process, so some comparison poses were in order to compare the two visits.

Twin Beauties!

As the new year approaches, Jessica has returned to the frozen tundra of southern Pennsylvania (OK, that’s a bit of an exaggeration).  Next week Pam’s mother, Fran, arrives for a few days.  She lives along the St. Lawrence River in the far north (of New York) where it  really gets cold, so she is in need of a warm weather fix.  Until then we’ll just spend some quiet days cleaning the motorhome and relaxing by the pool.  What!  Somebody has to do it!

Wow, what an inspiration for healthy eating and exercise! You both look fantastic. Also looks like you’ve found a beautiful place to stay for a few weeks. We were just on Sanibel for a week and loved it. So much fun to bike all over the island.

  2. Sheila says:

The weather might not be ideal…but you have NO snow!

Wow. wow, wow…two beauties is an understatement. You both should be very proud of yourselves. You have accomplished a great feat!

Where is mom staying? With you two?

Y’all are looking good! Great looking RV park, as well.

  7. Gay says:

Great job Pam and Jessica…you both look great! So glad Jessica was able to spend some “holiday” time with you.

Your site is beautiful and that sunset is perfect! We have never visited that part of Florida…seriously thinking about it for next winter. Enjoy your time…..we love the longer stays this time of year.

    • placestheygo says:

      Thanks, Gay!

We like to come to Ft. Myers for January because it is usually a little warmer than the Tampa area. There seems to be a temperature band that runs right between the two cities. We will move south of the Tampa area next month.

      • john says:

we are just south of you in Bonita Springs and agree about the temp difference between here and Tampa, we also will be looking for a stay in Feb near Tampa… just haven’t figured out where yet…

  8. You girls look great! Good job!

Looks like a really wonderful site you have. A great place to be planted for a bit!

  9. colibabas says:

Great looking spot you have. Definitely have to get back to Florida one of these winters.
    Looking good ladies!

    Happy New Year!

  10. Erin says:

You done good with those healthy eating and exercise programs. Lovely place you’re at … will definitely have to Pinterest it for when we someday return to Florida. Nice of you to be in a place where those who need to thaw out after the storms in the north can come and visit.

    • placestheygo says:

Yes, we may not have had the sunniest skies but we did have the heat. I hope it stays warm for my mother next week. Of course, anything higher than 10 will be warm for her!!

Cypress Woods is a great resort. They have two pools, tennis, pickle ball, and a great library. It is a 2 1/2 mile loop around the whole place…makes for a good walk. Starbucks is 5.2 mile away, good bike ride!

  11. You ladies look great. Keep it up! And Happy New Year!

  12. Paul Weaver says:

A remarkable transformation…AWESOME! Some things never change – Starbucks!

  13. Love the before and after pictures. Well done both of you! Keep it up for 2014. Happy New Year!

  14. Janna says:

Awesome job Pam and Jessica–well done!! Losing weight is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do in my life! Love your site–Michael said the other day he really liked Florida for all the “green.”

    • placestheygo says:

Thanks, Janna! Actually, eight months of long days hiking did most of the work. We would be so tired when we returned home every night that their was little cooking. Can’t wait to get back and see how much more comes off!

Florida is green but the beautiful mountains and gorgeous scenery are missing.

  15. LuAnn says:

What a transformation you both have made! Here’s to fitness and a healthy diet. Enjoy your time in Ft. Myers and Happy New Year to you both! 🙂

  16. Ingrid says:

Looking good ladies……a 2013 accomplishment for sure. Enjoy FL and I like your speed as you head north 🙂 Happy New Year!

  17. rommel says:

Very very impressive transformations!, especially those coffee cups. 😆 Impressive accomplishments. You two must be proud of yourselves from the achievements.

  18. You gals look good…or maybe it’s the warm beach attire. Not sure.
    Baby it’s cold outside, here.

  19. Sherry says:

Just dropped by to thank you for the comment and to agree that we seem to have a lot in common including daughters who run. Ours visited us over the holidays when we were at Oscar Scherer. I’m going to look into your park for some possible extended time next year unless we are able to stay in So Cal. So true about being south of Tampa for January and I thought the first part of February but I guess I’ll find out. Thanks to Al for connecting us. He does good work.

  20. Sue says:

Come on guys – we’re waiting for a new post! Life can’t be that boring can it?
    hahahaha
