Biking and Boating Around York

York, PA

Yes, we are still here in a small park just west of York completing a list of errands, visiting doctors and dentists, and visiting our daughter, Jessica.  Next week Pam has a final dental appointment (the results of a root canal) that will complete our medical visits.  We’ll stay here another couple of weeks so we can watch Jessica participate in a half marathon in Baltimore and something called an Urbanathlon  in Queens, NY.

One of the neat events we were able to attend during our visit was a girls’ soccer game at Dallastown High School, the district where Pam taught third grade for many years.  It was Teacher Appreciation Day and each each senior was asked to chose a teacher who had a strong influence on them during their academic years.  Most of the girls selected a high school teacher, as they have such a recent experience with them.  But one of the girls dipped way back into her past, all the way back to third grade,  and invited that teacher to attend the ceremony.  Having a student appreciate your efforts is the best recognition a teacher can receive, so Pam was honored to attend the ceremony.

York County has a very nice rail trail that runs from the City of York south for about fifteen miles to the Maryland line, where it continues south almost to Baltimore.  One sunny fall day we took the bicycles over to the trail for a ride.

The trail travels along rail tracks that are still in use by a tourist train.  It passes through tree lined valleys and past fields of corn and soy beans.

After a bit over eleven miles we came to our destination, the little town of Glen Rock.  The town is very small and doesn’t have much to attract one to it, but it does have a great little Italian restaurant, Mignano Brothers.  The school district where John worked and both our children attended is just outside Glen Rock, and we lived in another small town just five miles away, so we have eaten here many, many times.  Now a visit back to the area always includes at least one meal at Mignano’s!

While there isn’t much in the town, there is a beautiful mural on the wall of one of the buildings along the trail.

Five or six miles north of Glen Rock the trail goes through a small area known locally as Hanover Junction.  A railroad station was built there between 1852 and 1854 by the Hanover Branch Railroad.  On November 18-19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln traveled through Hanover Junction travelling to and from dedicatory ceremonies for the Gettysburg National Cemetery.  Photographs are believed to depict Lincoln on the station platform.

The building in the 1860s. It sure looks like Lincoln standing in the middle!

A bit further north, the trail goes through Howard Tunnel.  The three hundred foot tunnel, named for Revolutionary War hero John Howard of Baltimore, was completed in 1838.

During the Civil War Union Troops manned a canon above the tunnel to protect it from Confederate troops who had been destroying railroad bridges and telephone lines.  Today Howard Tunnel is the oldest railroad tunnel in continuous use in the United States.

Later in the week we took out our inflatable kayak (labeled the “Dumbass” by one of our children) for a cruise around Lake Williams.  If you read our last blog, you may remember us hiking around the lake a few weeks earlier.

It was a beautiful fall day and the trees around the lake are just beginning to show some color.

We have about three weeks left in our stay here and are beginning to get a bit anxious to be on the move.  In our three years living in the motorhome, this is the longest we have stayed in one place.  If it wasn’t for the two running activities Jessica is in, we would be long gone.  But Myrtle Beach, our next stop, will just have to wait a bit!

  1. Looks like you’re having fun and keeping busy. At least you should get to see the leaves change.
Pam, you must have had a really big influence on your former student for her to remember you after so many years!

We are looking forward some beautiful fall hikes over the next few weeks.

It was quite an honor for Caroline to select me. I was thrilled that we were in town for the game.

As a native, I take offense at your slight of Glen Rock! HA! There are lots of sights. Did you by any chance see the meth lab?

  3. Gay Taylor says:

What a nice trail…you guys look great! I’m sure there is a story about Dumbass and how it got its name…I must have missed it. Glad you are enjoying the fall weather!

What a nice honor by your former student.

Gay, you didn’t miss the naming of the kayak. When we first launched it up on the St. Lawrence River, we sent a picture to our son. He wrote back and commented on the USS Dumbass. Now it seems to be the name!! Haha!

Hiking in the coming weeks should pretty which I am looking forward to seeing.

Thanks! I was thrilled that we were in town for the game so I could walk with Caroline.

  4. I am so glad this time when I get my crown I do not need a root canal! YUCK!

What a wonderful soccer event. Congratulations Pam. What an honor. So glad you two were in the area.

If John had a beard, I would swear I was looking at Lincoln reincarnated.

You have a ton of history in that area. Love the tunnel. Pretty cool.

Looks like a gorgeous day for a water ride. Glad to see the brains of the “Dumbass” sitting up front.

Good to hear from you guys and it seems as if you are still out hiking, biking and kayaking! Looks like Lincoln to me!

What a neat honor to be selected by your former student! Love the bike trail, looks like a very pretty place to ride. I bet you are getting itchy feet after staying in one place so long…that’s the way I feel after two months in San Diego!

  7. Very interesting to see the today vs. old photographs. Love the Dumbass. Sounds like something I would paddle! Roll on Myrtle Beach!

  8. Sue says:

I love the “then and now” photos! I understand the “itch”….we’re both suffering right now and have moved our departure date a week and a half earlier! Looking forward to a quick visit with you guys in York on our way south.

What an honor for you Pam to be recognized after all these years…congratulations on making such a difference in this young woman’s life. This is a part of the country we know so little about so it is wonderful to be seeing it through your eyes. Safe travels! 🙂

  10. Dave says:

Hope the weather holds out for you to see the marathon, and give you time to get to a warm winter location.

    • placestheygo says:

Thanks, Dave! Looks like it might be a little damp Sat. but I am sure our daughter will manage. We’ll get wet riding our bikes around to follow the race. Oh, well!

We begin our southern move at the end Oct. It is getting a little cooler here now.

  11. Wow, that must have been a great feeling to be picked! Somehow, someone send word around that a great teacher is in town.
I don’t recall Lincoln to be in shorts! nice pose John.

    Hello John and Pam,
Sorry about taking so long to respond re travel info on Canada. As you know time zooms by when your retired. Work never went this fast…it always seemed to be Monday! If you send me your email address in a PM on RV-Dreams I will have some suggestions for you.

  13. Hi John and Pam,
I got your comment on our blog, but I cant find an email for you, and I have consistently had trouble commenting on your blog. But determination got me to figure out how to fix the problem this time. Anyway, we are in Lancaster, heading for York on our way to Gettysburg tomorrow. If you will email us with where you are staying, maybe we can stay there tomorrow night so we can meet. You can get our email off our blog.

Love the mural and the look of the red building. I was disappointed to myself having not gone canoeing or kayaking way before than I should have only to find it an awesome activity to do, and an easy one too.

  15. Pam says:

I love that you were able to attend the ceremony for teacher appreciation day. This honor says a lot about the difference you made in affecting students’ lives.

Good to see you out on the kayak again. Funny name. We keep renaming ours as we can’t ever remember what we decided to call them.

I know what you mean about getting anxious to move. This year when we went “home” there seemed to be less to hold us there. But, it is wonderful that you are staying long enough to cheer your daughter on in her races.

  16. Tom Stack says:

good ole York county!!! Glad someone explored the redman area! The last two times I adventured out there I got rained on!! Hope all is well!
