Miramar Beach, FL (on the FL panhandle)
We continue to enjoy the nice weather of northern Florida during our stay just east of Destin along the Gulf of Mexico. From our park, it’s only about a half mile walk to the beach, so we have enjoyed some nice days in the pure white sand. There are hotels and condo buildings along the shore so you have to use a public beach access walk and stairs to get to the water.
Since spring break is finally over, the beach is almost empty. The sand here is very white and squeaks when you walk on it.
One day we took the motorcycle out for a ride along the coast. About twenty miles to the west you can take a bridge from the mainland across the Santa Rosa Sound to Santa Rosa Island and Navarre Beach.
Continuing to the west you ride through a beach area very much like the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
The middle section of the island is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. There are no structures for about seven miles but nice bike lanes on either side of the road and great views.
On the west end of the island is Pensacola Beach where you cross a causeway back to the mainland.
Golf fans know that last week the Masters was won by Bubba Watson in a very exciting playoff with South African Louis Oosthuizen. Bubba is from Bagdad, FL which is just about twenty miles north of where we left the island. So we altered our very busy schedule and headed north to check out Bagdad and adjacent Milton, where Bubba attended high school. Bagdad and Milton are pretty run-of-the-mill small rural Florida towns and the high school is not much to look at. But something must be happening there, as among it’s recent alumni are three members of the PGA tour (Bubba Watson, Boo Weekly, and Heath Slocum) and two players in the NFL (Cortland Finigan of the Rams and Lawrance Tynes of the Giants). Nice to have a Masters champ and a Super Bowl champ from your school!
We will be here in Miramar Beach until the end of the month, then head north to Pennsylvania after a brief stop in Atlanta for a visit with our son, Kevin. But that’s info for a future blog.
