A Little More From Key West

Our two week stay in Key West is quickly coming to an end.  The weather continued to be great with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the lower 70s!  Below are some pictures taken as we explored the city.

Mallory Square is along the Straights of Florida and is the main area where the tour boats come in.  It is also a great place to watch the sunset and so it draws a big crowd each evening.  Along with the tourists there are a number of street performers competing for their attention (and money).  We watched one performer don a straight jacket then have volunteers wrap him in chains.  That was entertaining but the best part of the performance was his running monologue of jokes.  Below he is bent over removing the chains.

He then finishes his show by escaping from the straight jacket.  OK, it wasn’t a Vegas performance, but it was entertaining.

Clouds obscured much of the sunset but some great views were still observable.

The house below is called an eyebrow house.  The second floor windows are covered by the roof for cooling.  Key West is the only location to find such houses.

Route 1 runs along the east coast from Maine to Florida.  We didn’t ride bikes the entire length but did find the end of the line.

But don’t worry.  You just cross the street and start all over again!

Near the harbor you will find the “establishment” pictured below.  At first glance it appears to be a hideout for the homeless.

But go around the other side and you find it to be one of Key West’s most famous quirky landmarks, B.O.’s Fish Wagon.  Now that’s B. O., not Bo.

You can eat at a table or enjoy your sandwich sitting at a counter along the sidewalk.

Many strange and exotic plants are seen all over the island.  Below is a palm found in the yard of many homes.

It’s been a grand time visiting the crazy town of Key West.  But now it’s time to start our engine and begin our trek north (since we can’t drive any further south).  More on that later . . .

John– Yesterday we were discussing the Platt Amendment and how it gave us the right to buy/lease land in Cuba. I asked if they knew what piece of territory that would be. At first no hands went up (honors? really?), but then one student answered, “Key West?” Hmmm. Did you realize that you were in Cuba? Are you going to be smoking cigars? Once I had corrected him and told them the real answer, I got a chorus of Oh’s.

By the way, your pictures continue to be fantastic.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year,
    Deb

I can’t believe you have been there for two weeks. It has just flown by!
How cool…I never heard of an eyebrow house. So appropriate!
Love the pictures. You two sure had a wonderful time! Makes me want to fly down there with you!
Safe travels to your next destination. Merry Christmas!
