Yesterday (Tuesday) we drove from Herrin to Springfield, IL and parked in the camping area of the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Its a large open area that is probably very crowded at fair time (mid-August) but fairly empty now. One of the friendly workers escorted us to a nice site under a tree where there is some relief during this heatwave.
Today we drove into the main part of the city to visit the sites. It was a very hot day so someone needed to sit for a bit on one of the many benches in the park. Apparently the locals are not very friendly as the guy with the beard wouldn’t even say hello!
We spent most of the afternoon visiting the Lincoln Presidential Museum, which is a “don’t miss” place all Americans should visit. It is filled with Lincoln memorabilia and has two audio/visual presentations that use the latest hi-tech imagery. What a first class show!
Since the time was late we decided to extend our stay in Springfield another day and will visit the Lincoln home site tomorrow.
